We marathoned 'Happy Endings' the other week - because that's what we do - and since I have this shiny new journal, I figured I can do reaction posts.

I'm going to assume you kind of know a little about the show already, because I'm lazy that way. In a nutshell, Dave got left at the altar by Alex. They have friends Jane, Brad (who are married to each other), Max (who's gay) and Penny (who's naive and still kinda awesome).

Episode 6 - Jane and Penny do Crave Maghra (sp?)! We have a weird affection for this martial art since Gilmore Girls. Also, Dave and Alex try to catch the stupidest, most adorable mouse in the world. Brad is proved to be a gaycist.

I think my favourite part was the mention of Jane's lesbian phase in college (it was a long phase) and Brad's completely normal and intrigued reaction. And of course, at the end when Jane and Penny hug after a vigorous self defence session, all sweaty and stuff - somewhere, Brad is thinking 'I have the weirdest boner right now'.

Dave's whole thing with Alex's apartment, sticking around for the clean shower etc? Rang very true and was handled really well. All the things that he was fixing? Why didn't he just fix the shower at Max's place? Because he DOESN'T LIVE THERE! Unpacking and making adjustments to the living space means accepting that he lives there now, and I think they made that apparent without making it obvious.

Episode 7 (episode names are just too mainstream) - Penny dates a hipster, Jane and Max compete to see who would survive a zombie apocalypse and Dave tries to open a restaurant!

Oh zombie apocalypses. They just never get old. I'm never sure if I want them to appear early in a show's run so the idea is in your head from the beginning or to just appear out of nowhere midway through so you suddenly realise what's been missing all along. It's the thing that you have to think about when watching a show; who would survive? Happy Endings comes along and tells you, straight off the bat - Jane. I think Alex and Dave would survive because that makes a nice Shaun of the Dead reference.

I love how Happy Endings just does stuff without drawing attention to it. There's never any giant flashing sign saying 'this will be important later'. The writing just kind of weaves everything together for the gags at the end (Chekov's plotline?).

We really like this show. It's like a mixture of Coupling (YAY STEVEN MOFFATT), Friends and How I Met Your Mother. Ooo, now I feel like watching Coupling.
